From national survey data to public climate education
An ITS Rio research-grant project: turning survey data into public education.
Overview
In 2022, the Institute for Technology & Society of Rio de Janeiro (ITS Rio) ran a research-grant programme around its study "Climate change in Brazilians' eyes" (Mudanças climáticas na percepção dos brasileiros). Selected grantees were given the survey data to turn into public-facing outputs. The underlying 2021 survey was conducted by ITS Rio with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and carried out by IPEC.
The problem
Public understanding was patchy. Even the basic distinction between "global warming" and "climate change" was widely confused, and people tend to underweight a threat that feels slow and abstract.
What I did
I took part as a grantee, paired with journalist Bruna Fernanda Suptitz (creator of Pensar a Cidade, Porto Alegre). Working from the 2021 survey data, our group produced a short educational video explaining the difference between global warming and climate change. With Bruna, I co-researched and wrote it, and I did its editing and animation. It was conceived as introductory content for a wider audience.
